THE FALSE CLAIM ABOUT HEBREWS 7:8

THE FALSE CLAIM; "Hebrews 7:8 is instructing a Christian to tithe ten percent of their income to a church or minister."

THE VERSE; Hebrews 7:8 - "And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth."

THE COMMENTARY AND CLARIFICATION of Hebrews 7:8 is found in Hebrews 7:9 - "And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham."

Note; "And as I may so say" ... the writer of the Book of Hebrews is telling us that he is about to make a clarifying comment or commentary of what he wrote in Hebrews 7:8.

The commentary on Hebrews 7:8 is as follows...

>>> From Hebrews 7:8 ... "And here men that die receive tithes" (...which received was under the law of Moses [citation A]);

> The commentary and clarification in Hebrews 7:9 ... "And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes"

>>> From Hebrews 7:8 ... "but there he 'receiveth them,' of whom it is witnessed that he liveth."

> The commentary and clarification in Hebrews 7:9 ... they [Levites] "payed tithes in Abraham." (...to an eternal priesthood, once and for all time proving the superiority of that eternal priesthood of Melchisedec; [citation B], [citation C], citation D])

CONCLUSION;

Hebrews 7:8 and Hebrews 7:9 make NO CLAIM that New Testament Christians are required to hand over ten percent of their income to anyone, or that the New Testament church should tithe as Abraham did to Melchisedec.

In order for the New Testament church to fulfill Hebrews 7:8 as "tithers" they would have to be a LEVITE (under the Law of Moses; [citation A]) in the loins of Abraham, and pay tithes through Abraham to Melchisedec. No New Testament Christian can do so. The church would also have to be tasked by God to prove the superiority of the Melchisedec Priesthood by tithing; the church has no such task required of it.

OTHER SCRIPTURAL REFERENCES CITED;

[A]Hebrews 7:5 - "And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:"

[B]Hebrews 7:7 - "And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better."

[C]Hebrews 7:15-16 - "And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life."

[D]Hebrews 8:6 - "But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises."

NOTE;

Hebrews 8:6 states that we have a better covenant, that fact was ONCE AND FOR ALL TIME proven by Abraham, with the Levites in his loins tithing to Melchisedec; Hebrews 7:7 - "And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better." The "better" is a reference to Melchisedec who represents the better (or superior) covenant, The New Testament; Hebrews 7:19 - "For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God."

No further tithing to Melchisedec, or to anyone else is required to establish the fact of the superior New Covenant. Hebrews 7:8 is not a call for "Christian tithing." Hebrews 7:8-9 is simply stating (in keeping with the entire 7th chapter Hebrews) the superiority of the Melchisedec priesthood which will live forever having the power of endless life. ___________________________________________________________________

THE MODERN DAY CHURCH

WHAT TITHING TEACHERS WILL NEVER TELL YOU

WHAT TITHING TEACHERS WILL NEVER TELL YOU

>> If you do this...

Malachi 3:10 - "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

>> Then you are also bound by this...

Deuteronomy 27:26 - "Cursed be he that confirmeth not ALL the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen."

And this...

James 2:10 - "For whosoever shall keep THE WHOLE LAW, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."

And this...

Galatians 5:3 - "For I testify again to every man that is circumcised [i.e., keeping the Law of Moses], that he is a debtor to do THE WHOLE LAW."

>> Because of this...

Malachi 3:7 - "Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances [the Law of Moses], and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?"

Malachi 4:4 - "Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments."

>> Why? Because Malachi 3:10 was written pursuant to, based on, and under the authority of the Law of Moses. Malachi 3:10, bringing tithes to the storehouse, originates from the Law of Moses;

Numbers 18:26 - "Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe."

Which is explained (expanded) in detail here...

Nehemiah 10:38 - "And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house."

To tithe based on Malachi 3:10 places a person under the Law of Moses, and therefore subject to the results of not obeying the whole Law of Moses.

ADDITIONALLY...

>> And; if you are tithing money, if your tithe consists of money, you are in violation of God's word that states the following...

Deuteronomy 14:22-27 - "Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always. And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee: Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose: And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household, And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee."

...consume the tithe yourself, or sell the tithe for money, bind the money to your hand, DO NOT USE IT TO PAY A TITHE; money must be spent on you and your family, part of your purchases shared with a Levite within your gates.

>> To Israel, not to the New Testament Church;

Malachi was written to the Nation of Israel under the Law of Moses; the church is NOT Israel, and the church is NOT under the Law of Moses. See; Malachi 3:7, Malachi 4:4, Hebrews 7:5, AND; Acts 15:24 - "Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave NO such commandment:"

Romans 6:14-15 - "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid." ___________________________________________________________________

THE FALSE ARGUMENT

THE FALSE ARGUMENT

A typical false argument for "tithing" used by many tithers and false tithing teachers is "Tithing is more of a good starting point based off of an OT precedent rather than an outright command."

ANSWER...

Tithing is NOT a good starting point because nothing in the New Testament instructs a Christian to "start at 10 percent." All you are doing is trying to get around the fact that no scripture in the New Testament instructs tithing for Christians, so you are trying to redefine tithing as a "New Testament starting point," when in fact there is NO such starting point to be found in the New Testament. Also, for the following reasons...

In the New Testament no Apostle ever instructed tithing, asked for a tithe, rebuked any person or church for not tithing, or received a tithe. Not one of them. The early church seen in the Book of Acts NEVER tithed. We have NO record of them doing so. In fact, The Book of Acts records this...

"Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave NO such commandment:" - Acts 15:24

NOT REQUIRED, NOT EVEN SUGGESTED

If tithing was required and taught in the New Testament for Christians, it would have to be clearly detailed and outlined in the terms and conditions of the New Testament like all promises and commands of the New Testament are. Tithing instructions would be clearly included in the New Testament, there are NO SUCH INSTRUCTIONS TO BE FOUND. No such terms, conditions or details are outlined anywhere in the New Testament. Tithing was never, is not now, and will never be part of the New Testament. The New Testament KNOWS NOTHING OF ANY COMMAND FOR A BELIEVER TO TITHE.
