THE PURPOSE OF GOD IN ABRAHAM'S TITHE
We have recorded for us the following...
Genesis 14:18-20 - "And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all."
THE PURPOSE
Abraham's tithe was a one time event that included a component of the Law of Moses by the Levites being present in Abraham's loins. (See; Hebrews 7:9)
It's purpose; it was used by God to demonstrate the superiority of the eternal Priesthood of Melchisedec over the temporary and inferior Priesthood of Levi. (See; Hebrews 7:6-7) It is not an excuse for your pastor or anyone else to pressure you into "paying your tithe because Abraham did." Abraham's tithe was NOT for the purpose of supporting a church or some other New Testament ministry.
Abraham's tithe had no other spiritual purpose and would have been spiritually useless unless it included the paying of a tithe in Abraham by the Levites to Melchisedec. If Abraham had not possessed the Levites in his loins representing the Law of Moses (See; Hebrews 7:11) upon paying a tithe to Melchisedec, it's highly unlikely that the tithing event would have been considered to be of a significant episode in Abraham's life and subsequently recorded in Genesis chapter fourteen, and then later referenced in Hebrews chapter seven along with explaining it's true purpose.
HEBREWS CHAPTER SEVEN
Hebrews 7:6-7 - "But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better."
Hebrews 7:9 - "And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham."
Hebrews 7:11 - "If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?"
You cannot separate the Levites from the Law, the Law of Moses.
WHY MELCHISEDEC THE GREATER?
Scripture reveals why;
Hebrews 7:15-16 - "And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life."
Levi; "the law of a carnal commandment" ...that fades away; 2 Corinthians 3:4-11, "a ministry of death." Hebrews 7:8 - "And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth."
Melchisedec; "the power of an endless life" ... Hebrews 7:24 - "But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood."
CONCLUSION
Proving the superiority of the Priesthood of Melchisedec to the Hebrews (and the entire world) has been accomplished; you don't need to tithe again and again to prove it again and again.
You are NOT Abraham, you cannot pay a tithe to Melchisedec, or to anyone else, as Abraham did because you do not have the Levites in your loins and cannot prove the superiority of Melchisedec.
Paying a tithe as Abraham did is utterly useless and absolute unproductive nonsense for a Christian. No scripture in God's word instructs neither Jew or Gentile, in either the Old or New Testament to tithe as, or because Abraham did.
***********************
HEBREWS 7:8-9 IS NOT THE CHURCH TITHING TO JESUS
Hebrews 7:8 refers to the Levites, the Law of Moses tithing to Melchidek, not the New Testament church. The New Testament church is not the Nation of Israel, not the tribe of Levi, not the Law of Moses and has no command to tithe anything to anyone.
Tithing teachers attempt to teach their monetary tithing (money from income) to New Testament Christians by claiming that Hebrews 7:8-9 is "proof that tithing is a New Testament requirement." The scripture reads...
Hebrews 7:8-9 - "And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham."
FACTS CONCERNING HEBREWS 7:8-9
1. The Church is not the tribe of Levi, and does not represent the Law of Moses recorded in Hebrews 7:8-9 or in any other scripture. The New Testament Church was not present in Abraham as being referenced by the writer of Hebrews when Abraham tithed to Melchisedec. The focus is on Levi and the Law of Moses tithing to Melchisedec, not the other tribes or even Judah.
2. The purpose of Abram's tithe to Melchisedec was to prove and demonstrate the superiority of the Melchisedec priesthood (New Testament) over the Levite priesthood (Old Testament / Law of Moses).
3. If the individuals in Hebrews 7:8-9 were the New Testament Church tithing to Melchisedec (who also represents the Testament Church), we would see a situation of nothing being proven or demonstrated; Hebrews 7:8-9 is not presented as the New Testament paying a tithe to Melchisedec and cannot be used to make any such claim.
4. Abraham's tithe to Melchisedec achived its purpose of proving the superiority of the Melchisedec priesthood, no further tithing is required, commanded or needed.
SIMPLE, CLEAR AND CONCISE
Hebrews 7:8 is the tribe if Levi representing the Law of Moses tithing through Abraham to Melchisedec ... ABRAHAM TO MELCHISEDEC ... not a Christian tithing money to a church or modern day pastor. (See; Hebrews 7:9)
The Church of Jesus Christ does not have a command to be as Leivites representing the Law of Moses tithing to Melchisedec, which said Melchisedec is claimed to be the Church authorized to receive tithes claimed to be "tithing to Jesus in Heaven."
Hebrews 7:8 is not a type, shadow or an example to be followed by the New Testament Church in tithing. Hebrews 7:8 is clearly descriptive, not prescriptive. The Levites tithing to Melchisedec has NEVER been cited in God's Word as an example to follow.
In reality, God's purpose of Abraham's tithe was the Levites (in the loins of Abraham), the Law (Hebrews 7:11), tithing to Melchizedek proving the superiority of the Priesthood of Melchizedek over the Levites;
Hebrews 7:7 - "And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better."
CONCLUSION
The transaction in Hebrews 7:8 accomplished what God needed it to accomplish. No further tithing is required, commanded, needed or is of any value.

TITHE LIKE ABRAHAM?
To all you people who claim you're "tithing" because, or following the example of Abraham; tell us; why are you not also doing this with your money?...
>> ONE;
Genesis 14:22-23 - "And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:"
NOTE; Abraham did not regard anything of what he had taken during the rescue of Lot (the spoils, Hebrews 7:4) as his own property to keep; "and that I will not take any thing THAT IS THINE."
>> TWO;
Abraham did not tithe on his own income or property he had already obtained, his tithe to Melchisedec was limited to the spoils of Lot's rescue;
Hebrews 7:4 - "Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils."
NOTE; "Abraham gave the TENTH OF THE SPOILS."
>> THREE;
Abraham gave part of the spoils of Lot's rescue to the men who helped him do so;
Genesis 14:24 - "Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion."
Are you giving part of your money to anyone helping you obtain it? Why not? Abraham did. Are you not following the example of Abraham?
CONCLUSION
Concluding the rescue Lot, Abraham kept ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from the spoils of war he took. Stop making a fool of yourself and displaying your ignorance by telling us "you tithe because Abraham did," or "you tithe because tithing was practiced before the Law of Moses." Stop living in a fantasy world; YOU ARE NOT TITHING AS ABRAHAM DID. And, God has never said to tithe because, or as Abraham did.
Oh, I almost forgot; that Hebrew, Jacob? ...forget it, he never tithed anything to anyone we have any record of. Jacob's offer to tithe was a VOW, not a command to tithe. Nice try, but Jacob can't help you in your foolish quest to support a fake unbiblical modern day "money tithing system" based on nothing more than the deceptive traditions of men which make void the world of God;
"Traditions of men" that nullify the word of God refer to human-made rules, rituals, or doctrines elevated above divine commands, ultimately replacing biblical obedience with empty, man-centric practices...
Mark 7:13 - "Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."
>> Abraham, Levi and Melchisedec;
Hebrews 7:8-9 - "And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham."
Hebrews 7:8,9 is the Levites / Mosaic Law tithing to Melchisedec; the Church is not the Levites / Law, and has no command to tithe to anyone or any organization.
***********************
HEBREWS 7:8; NOT A REASON FOR CHRISTIAN TITHING
The tithing referred to in Hebrews 7:8 involved three basic people; Abram (Abraham), Levi and Melchisedec;
Hebrews 7:8-10 - "And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him."
Tithing teachers claim that these three men and their activities involved in tithing are a statement, an example that Christians should follow and "pay tithes;" that is to say, Christians are required to hand over ten percent of their income to a minister or church based on Hebrews 7:8. Such a statement is simply not true and cannot be upheld under close scrutiny.
AN EXAMINATION OF THE THREE INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED
>> MELCHISEDEC;
If you are going claim that Melchisedec as a representative of the New Testament is a type (a similitude) of New Testament ministers receiving of tithes, and therefore as priests of the New Testament, ministers should be tithed to, you have created for yourself a big problem; we are ALL New Testament Priests. So, therefore I would like you to send me your tithe as soon as you get your next paycheck. Each New Testament Christian should be tithing to all other New Testament Christians. Why? This is why; we are...
1 Peter 2:9 - "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:"
Revelation 5:10 - "And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth."
>> ABRAHAM;
Many tithing teachers claim that we follow the faith of Abraham by "tithing as Abraham did," that we should hand over ten percent of our income to a minister citing Abraham as "the example to be followed."
Among many problems with such a false doctrine is that no scripture states that Abraham "tithed in faith," no scripture in either the Old of New Testament cites Abraham directly as an example of tithing to be followed by Jews, Gentiles or the Church. No Apostle referred to Abraham's tithing as giving authority to any New Testament minister to collect tithes. The Levites had been given that authority, the Church has not;
Hebrews 7:5 - "And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:"
Abraham's tithe to Melchisedec fulfilled a purpose, which was probably unknown to Abraham at that time, that of his tithe to Melchisedec proving the superiority of the Melchisedec priesthood over the Levite priesthood; Hebrews 7:7 - "And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better." Abraham's tithe, "without all contradiction" (cannot be refuted) has accomplished that which God intended it to accomplish. It does not need to be performed over and over again by New Testament Believers, doing so is useless and not commanded.
In the following scripture verses the faith of Abraham is addressed, yet not one of them mentions his tithe to Melchisedec;
> Romans 4:11-12: Identifies Abraham as the father of all who believe (both circumcised and uncircumcised) and calls believers to "walk in the footsteps of the faith" he had.
> Galatians 3:7-9: States that "those who have faith are children of Abraham" and that those who rely on faith are blessed along with him.
> Galatians 3:29: Affirms that if you belong to Christ, you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to the promise.
> Romans 4:22-25: Explains that faith being credited as righteousness was not written for Abraham alone, but also for "us to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead".
> Hebrews 11:8-10: Highlights Abraham's obedience in leaving his country by faith, serving as a model of faith-driven action.
> James 2:21-23: Mentions that Abraham's faith was perfected by his actions (obedience) when he offered Isaac, showing that genuine faith works.
If you will notice; Abraham's tithe to Melchisedec is left out of the above verses! Why would scripture leave out Abraham's tithe? ...because it was not an act of faith, AND NOT SOMETHING TO BE CONTINUED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.
Additionally; not everything Abraham did was an act of faith, or an activity to be followed.
Abraham circumcised over 300 in his household; are we to do the same under the New Testament? NO! In fact, in the 11th Chapter of the Book of Hebrews (commonly referred to as the "faith hall of fame"), no act of tithing by Abraham or anyone's tithing is mentioned. God's test of Abraham's faith was the offering of Isaac, not tithing; Genesis 22:2 - "And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of."
>> LEVI;
In the loins of Abraham we find Levi. Levi represented the Levite priesthood and the Law of Moses (Hebrews 7:11). Levi does not represent the New Testament Church "tithing to Melchisedec," on the contrary, Levi represents an inferior priesthood, now defunct, who's main function was the service at the alter of sacrifice (Numbers 18:21-24), and is no longer valid (Hebrews 9:12, Hebrews 10:1-10 and Hebrews 7:11);
Hebrews 7:5-6 - "And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises."
Levi represented the Law of Moses (Hebrews 7:5, 7:11), not the New Testament Church, which (the Church) is not under the Law of Moses and does not represent the Law of Moses;
Acts 15:24 - "Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:"
Romans 6:14 - "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."
CONCLUSION
Hebrews 7:8 does not represent an example of New Testament tithing to be followed. The blessing of Abraham does not come through tithing, but rather through faith in Jesus Christ;
Galatians 3:14 - "That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."
As we have asked previously; Tell us; who under the New Testament has been authorized by God in His word to demand or receive tithes? The answer is NO ONE.

THE CHURCH TO TITHE BASED ON HEBREWS 7:8?
Though tithing was mentioned before Moses, moving forward in time; the tithe (tithing) came under the administration and control of the Law (the Law of Moses, the Commandment)...
Numbers 18:21 - "And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Hebrews 7:5 - "And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:"
MOVING FORWARD
The tithe (tithing) declared obsolete and canceled...
Hebrews 7:18-19 - "For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God."
>> Additionally;
Hebrews 7:8 refers to the Law of Moses [represented by the Levites; see Hebrews 7:11] paying a tithe to Melchizedek, which proved the superiority of Melchisedec over the Levite priesthood and the Law (Hebrews 7:7- "And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better").
It was in fact the Levites paying a tithe to Melchisedec...
Hebrews 7:9 - "And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham."
The New Testament Church is NOT the Law of Moses, are NOT Levites, are NOT the Commandment, AND CANNOT TITHE BASED ON HEBREWS 7:8 TO ANYONE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. The New Testament Church is NOT represented in Hebrews 7:8 as paying tithes.
CONSIDER...
How and why did the Levites take tithes? Answer; because they were given THE COMMNADMENT to do so. Again; "have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law,"
The commandment to take tithes is, again; CANCELED, DISANNULED, ENDED, ABOLISHED because it was of the Law...
Hebrews 7:18 - "For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof."
CONCLUSION
All tithing is forever abolished and canceled! Hebrews 7:8 does NOT command a Christian to tithe anything to anyone.
***********************
YOU TELL US YOU "TITHE BECAUSE ABRAHAM DID"
No, you do not, and you cannot; here is why;
>> 1. Abraham tithed on the spoils of war that came from the victory over, and the slaughter of Kings, not from his personal wealth;
Hebrews 7:1 - "For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;"
Hebrews 7:4 - "Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils."
Genesis 14:17 - "And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale."
>> 2. From the spoils, above and beyond what Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek, Abraham paid the 318 men who fought with him;
Genesis 14:14 - "And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan."
Genesis 14:23-24 - "That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion."
>> 3. The remaining spoils of war were handed over to the pagan King of Sodom, whom Abraham considered the remaining spoils to be the property of the King of Sodom - "and that I will not take any thing that is thine";
Genesis 14:17 - "And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale."
Genesis 14:21-23 - "And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:"
>> 4. No scripture cites Abraham's tithe to Melchisedec as an example to the Nation of Israel or the Church to be followed. No person today can "tithe as Abraham did." If God had intended the New Testament church to follow the example of Abraham in tithing, it would have been clearly stated in the New Testament; no such command or teaching can be found in the New Testament.
>> 5. Abraham did not tithe the one thousand pieces of silver received from Abimelech (Genesis 20:16). Furthermore, he did not teach Isaac and Jacob to tithe despite the claim of monetary tithing proponents. Jacob's vow proves this point (Genesis 28:20-22). Why would someone make a vow if they were already practicing something taught to them? Vows are made for something to be done in the future. Contrary to the monetary tithing teachers, Jacob's vow actually refutes their argument instead of supporting it!
CONCLUSION
Tithing teachers often cite Abraham's tithe to Melchisedec as a reason to tithe, a reason to hand over ten percent of your income to them. Yet, they leave out the remaining important context (those inconvenient facts) of Abraham retaining nothing for himself, not tithing on his own wealth, and leaving the rest to a pagan king except that which his 318 men took for themselves.
Abraham kept NOTHING for himself; ARE YOU DOING THE SAME IN YOUR QUEST TO FOLLOW ABRAHAM, KEEPING NOTHING YOU EARN FOR YOURSELF?? Abraham did not keep anything; why are you?
Leaving out important details is often a strategy in the teachings of tithing teachers seeking to deceptively steal your money; text taken out of context is a pretext to deceptive claims.
Additionally; Abraham tithed to Melchisedec, not to a pastor, church or other ministry. No pastor or church under the New Testament has the authority to collect tithes on behalf of Melchisedec or Jesus Christ. Neither are receiving tithes today. Hebrews 7:8 records a one time transaction between Abraham (Levites) and Melchisedec, with no command from God that it is to be repeated or practiced by anyone. In the entire New Testament Hebrews 7:8 is never cited as an example to follow.
In reality; Abraham's tithe to Melchisedec was the Law of Moses in the Levites (Hebrews 7:11) tithing to Melchisedec. The New Testament Church is not the Law of Moses, does not represent the Law of Moses, is not under the Law of Moses and cannot tithe as Abraham did with the Law of Moses in their loins; Romans 6:14 - "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."
Still believe you can or should "tithe as Abraham did"?! If so, you are mentioned here; "the hearts of the simple"...
Romans 16:18 - "For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple."
And, here...
Hebrews 5:12-13 - "For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe."
This is your answer...
2 Timothy 2:15-16 - "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness."
***********************
HEBREWS 7:8
In this case the writer of the Book of Hebrews, in Hebrews 7:8, is using tithing to refer to the Law of Moses much as Paul used circumcision as a reference to the Law of Moses in Romans 2:25, as also the Church council used circumcision in reference to the Law Acts 15:24.
Hebrews 7:8-9 - "And here men that die receive tithes; but there he, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham."
Just as circumcision was a statement and type of Law keeping, that is to say being under the law, "receive tithes" equals, and also means to be under the Law, a priesthood established by the Law, functioned by the Law, judged by the Law.
Hebrews 7:5 - "And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:"
...Hebrews 7:8 says NOTHING of the kind. Hebrews 7:8 are the LEVITES (not the Church) and THE LAW OF MOSES (the Church is not the Law of Moses), tithing to Melchizedek. The New Testament Church is not the Levites and is not the Law of Moses and not shown tithing in Hebrews 7:8. Hebrews 7:8 does not represent the Church tithing to Melchizedek.
If the Church was tithing to Melchizedek in Hebrews 7:8, then you would have Melchizedek tithing to Melchizedek which would prove nothing, would NOT prove the superiority of Melchizedek priesthood over the Levites! Also; you forgot to read Hebrews 7:9...
Hebrews 7:9 - "And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham."
***********************
QUESTION...
Do you give what you do not tithe to a pagan government? Abraham did; why are you not doing so? Abraham kept nothing for himself, he gave it all away. Are you following in the footsteps of Abraham and keeping nothing for yourself?
Genesis 14:22-24 - "And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion."
Abraham circumcised 318 men in his household; are you doing the same?
Genesis 17:23 - "And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him."
Clearly you have much to learn about tithing and Abraham. Additionally;
God gave the tithe to the Levites, it was their personal property and inheritance. See Numbers 18 21-24. God has created no further tithes for the Church. Where did God take the tithe from the tribe of Levi and give it to your church or pastor? Chapter and verse please.
